Team Alice in Hill City

We stopped in Hill City on the way home from Lemmon and stayed 2 - nights at the Crooked Creek campground. We visited Mt Rushmore, rode the 1880 Train, and drove to Keystone for some siteseeing.

Walking into the memorial ...

The originator Gutzon Borglum ...

The amphitheater where an evening presentation is conducted and bright lights shine on the faces. It's VERY impressive!

Every state with the respective date of statehood is inscibed on pillars as you walk into the memorial. Connie found the Colorado inscription ...

We rode the 1880 Train from Hill City to Keystone. The actual train is not the original engine & cars from 1880 but early 1900's. The "1880 Train" refers to the route still being used between Hill City & Keystone that was part of a tin mining and general services route. It's also a standard guage railroad as opposed to the narrow guage railroads used in Colorado for mining support routes and such.

The steam engine taking on water at the Hill City station. It also takes on water at the Keystone end ...

A typical pasenger car that was converted &/or refurbished from its original use ...

The Hill City rail yard with additional engines ...

Connie sitting patiently while waiting to leave the Hill City station ...

One conductor authentically dressed ...

Beautiful scenery all along the route. The engine has to occasionally discharge remaining debris from the fire box ...

Once the engine is filled with water, it moves to the "other" end of the train for the return trip ...

We also visited the adjoining railroad museum ...
